Programs Overview
The School of Mechanical Engineering offers three international Master of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs entirely taught in English. All the programs include lectures and seminars, as well as laboratories, taught by internationally-recognized professors. These programs provide students with the specialized knowledge and skills to prepare them for an engineering or academic career in the fields of Applied Mechanics, Energy Conversion, and Mechatronics.
To earn the M.Sc. degree, students must complete a total of 32 credits, including 26 from 9 courses (3 core courses and 6 elective courses) and 6 from their dissertation. The minimum required grade to pass a course is 12 out of 20, and the minimum required GPA (grade point average) for each semester is 14 out of 20. The students are required to take three core courses in Semester 1, three elective courses in Semester 2, Seminar and two more elective courses in Semester 3, and their Dissertation in Semester 4. Students are free to choose a professor from the School of Mechanical Engineering as their advisor. However, they should finalize their advisor by the end of Fall 2019 semester. M.Sc. students must finalize their dissertation title and subject, and submit their proposals before Fall 2020 semester starts. Students must write their dissertations and defend it orally in English. The length of the M.Sc. program is 2 years (4 semesters), which may be extended for 2 more semesters upon department's approval.
To earn the Ph.D. degree, students must complete a total of 36 credits, including 18 from 6 courses (1 core course and 5 electives) and 18 from their dissertation. The minimum required grade to pass a course is 14 out of 20, and the minimum required GPA for each semester is 16 out of 20. The students are required to take 1 core course plus two elective courses in Semester 1, and three elective courses in Semester 2. After finishing the courses with a minimum GPA of 16, the students must take the comprehensive exam in which their knowledge on three undergraduate-level mechanical engineering subjects are examined, and must pass each subject with a minimum mark of 14 (out of 20), and an average of 16 (out of 20) on all three subjects. After that, the students must defend their Ph.D. research proposal in presence of the assigned committee, at most within a year after passing the comprehensive exam. Students must write their dissertations and defend it orally in English. Before defending their dissertation, the students must publish at least two ISI-indexed papers out of their work. The length of the program is four years (8 semesters), which may be extended for two more semesters upon department's approval.
